1. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
A 70-mile trail that runs along the top of the Laurel Ridge in Ohiopyle State Park, doing the full length of this hike is a major commitment. With a ranking as one of the best trails in Pennsylvania, it has good amenities and accessibility. More casual hikers can drop in and out as they wish on some of the flatter, easier sections.
2. McConnells Mill Slippery Rock Gorge Trail
Although it clocks in at a short 6.2 miles, this trail is rated as “moderate to difficult.” It is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail and features waterfalls, old-growth trees, and wildflowers.
3. Rachel Carson Trail
One of the closest hikes to Pittsburgh, this trail runs 35.7 miles and contains various terrains. Hikers can expect paved roads as well as steep, rugged sections. This trail also features a spur trail to the Hartwood Acres mansion.
